Floating Classrooms: Adapting to
Climate Crises
In Bangladesh, climate change has intensified flooding, disrupting lives and education. Rising waters make travel treacherous, forcing families to relocate and children to drop out of school. Our School on a Boat project brings innovative solutions to this crisis. We’ve launched floating classrooms that navigate flood-prone areas, ensuring education continues despite environmental challenges. Our boats serve as transportation and learning spaces, picking up students along waterways and transforming into classrooms. This unique approach keeps education afloat for children who might otherwise be left behind.
Adapting to climate change, our boat schools reach 420 students in flood-prone Bangladesh.
Our innovative project combines 10 land-based and 4 boat-based classrooms serving hard-to-reach areas. The boats act as both transport and floating schools, adapting to severe flooding. We follow a government-accredited national curriculum, enabling students to transition to formal education. With 14 trained teachers and 12 community-led management committees, we ensure quality education and local oversight. This groundbreaking initiative ensures that even in the face of rising waters, education remains accessible and uninterrupted.

Mujib's story illustrates the real
impact of our School on a Boat project.
Mujib’s family, displaced by floods and river erosion, now lives in a flood-prone area where he often misses school. Through our climate education workshops, Mujib has gained awareness about how the climate crisis affects his life. He now actively shares his experiences, encouraging classmates to protect the environment. Our School on a Boat project ensures that children like Mujib can continue their education despite environmental challenges. By providing consistent access to learning, we’re empowering a generation to understand and address the climate issues shaping their communities.
An annual payment of £120 or a monthly instalment of £10 can support a child with tuition and school resources.
