> School in a bus
More than 20 million children are out of school in conflict zones - UNICEF
Schools are sanctuaries, a safe haven for children that guides them through infancy to adulthood. Not only are they a steppingstone towards a brighter future, but they also provide essential services such as food, shelter, and clean water; they protect the vulnerable acting as a line of defence against exploitation, child marriage, and child labour.
Schools are a second home for students and children which is why when it’s destroyed in conflict, the long-term effects of such educational disruption to children and their community are devastating.
Conflicts and crises continue to take a heavy toll on children and youth.
> WHY SCHOOL IN A BUS
At READ, we believe that education is a fundamental right for everybody. It’s not only the most powerful tool to navigate through the course of life, but also the most powerful weapon in combating the cycle of poverty.
For children who have fled war-torn Syria, attending school is but a memory. One that they look upon often and fondly.
In Lebanon alone there are nearly 1 million refugee children suffering as a result of conflict.
This is something we cannot stand by and let happen.
READ Foundation is working with our trusted partners on the ground in Lebanon saving their lives and minds through our School in a Bus project.
The School in a Bus caters for 300 children and provides them with the tools they need to learn and develop. They are given books, learning materials, a mobile classroom with screens and interactive whiteboards. They are also given daily food, facemasks and are temperature checked due to the COVID19 pandemic.
Importantly, in addition to giving these vulnerable children a space to learn and play, they are given psychosocial support to help them deal with the trauma of conflict.
This Ramadan help us provide vulnerable children with an education.
