School in a Bus

Maryam is 9 years old. When war broke out in Syria, her family had to flee their home. They now live in a camp in Mount Lebanon, nine people trying to survive together. Her father found work to support them, but life in the camp meant Maryam couldn’t continue her education.

She used to dream of becoming an interior designer. She loved drawing the interiors of homes and buildings. In the camp, those dreams were impossible to achieve as her days were filled with household chores instead of schoolwork.

When READ Foundation’s School in a Bus arrived at the camp, Maryam joined our mobile school.

The daily courses brought back what she had been missing: English lessons, drawing through handicraft projects, and the feeling of being a student again.

Her parents watched her change. Their daughter, who had given up on school, now talked about returning to public school one day. The guilt they felt about her interrupted education began to ease.

The School in a Bus reconnected Maryam to the future she thought the war had taken away.
