The impact of war has left 13-year-old Layan with emotional scars that run deeper than skin. Bombings have taken the lives of her family members and left her traumatised, suffering from emotional muteness and fearful of loud and sudden noises.

This was when she started attending READ Foundation’s Psychosocial Support Sessions through the Education in Emergencies program.

Through creative outlets such as painting and writing, Layan was able to rebuild her confidence and find her voice again, beginning the process of healing.

Today, she says “I learned that sadness is not shameful, and hope exists even if it disappears for a while.”
