Prioritising Education: READ Foundation's Vision for Long-Term Planning Amid UK Elections

As the UK heads to the polls this week, the READ Foundation emphasises the importance of strategic, long-term education planning. We recognise the importance of this election, particularly in relation to the future of education in the UK. The Foundation for Educational Development (FED), of which the READ Foundation is a key strategic partner, has conducted extensive research, revealing the necessity for an incoming administration to prioritise strategic, long-term education planning.

This approach aims to enhance the education system and address various national challenges. A robust education system is crucial for improving employment opportunities, reducing inequality, promoting social mobility, and strengthening the economy. By advocating for long-term education planning, we are committed to nurturing an educational environment that fosters sustained progress and equitable opportunities for future generations.

FED’s recent position paper, “Focused on the Future: FED’s new report offers practical solutions for long-term education planning,” underscores the necessity of strategic foresight. Released ahead of the 4th National Education Report, this paper provides a comprehensive blueprint for transforming the education sector.

Stakeholders widely support FED’s initiatives. Professor Steve Munby, former Chief Executive of the National College for School Leadership, commends the proposals for their consultative approach and recognition of the experiences of educators, students, and parents. He emphasises integrating professional expertise with governmental leadership to achieve stable yet adaptive educational improvements.

Narinder Gill, from FED’s National Education Leaders Council, echoes this sentiment. As School Improvement Director for Elevate Multi-Academy Trust, Gill highlights how long-term planning empowers educators to implement initiatives effectively, ensuring equity, inclusivity, and effective governance to prepare students for an evolving world.

Over the past four years, FED has spearheaded an unprecedented consultation on education in England, revealing widespread support for a renewed focus on strategic planning. FED’s surveys indicate that 97% of respondents believe in the urgency of adopting a new approach to education planning, with 89% advocating for a comprehensive review of the system within the first year of the incoming government’s tenure.

To address these challenges, FED proposes:

1. Establishing a Long-Term Planning Framework for stability and consistency.

2. Creating an Education Council for independent leadership and effective governance.

3. Appointing a Chief Education Officer and Associated Office to embed expertise within the system.

4. Launching a National Education Assembly to engage a broader spectrum of stakeholders.

Embracing these proposals will enable the new government to establish a solid foundation for comprehensive and widely supported education policy reforms.

Join us at the 4th National Education Summit, “First Steps for Change – National Education Futures,” on November 5th in Manchester. This summit will address six critical areas for the incoming government:

1. The School Workforce
2. MATs, School and Education Partnerships
3. Inclusion
4. Student Financial Wellbeing
5. AI for Education
6. Creativity and Innovation

At the READ Foundation, we believe prioritising education is essential for the nation’s progress. Join us in advocating for strategic long-term education planning and be part of the change that shapes the future of our education system.
