In a rural community where many girls have limited access to education, nine-year-old Khemi is now attending the Community-Based Accelerated Learning Space in her village and slowly building confidence through learning.
Khemi studies at Asu Bai School and has been attending the learning centre for two years. Before joining the school, she spent much of her time at home without structured learning or activities.
“I would sit idle,” Khemi explained.
Today, she attends school regularly in a supportive classroom environment where teachers encourage her patiently and help her participate in lessons with confidence.
When asked what she likes most about school, Khemi spoke about the things that make learning enjoyable for her.
“TV, board, studying.”
For Khemi, the learning centre has become a place where she can learn, participate and enjoy being part of the classroom alongside other girls from her community.
The Empower Her project was made possible thanks to generous public donations to READ Foundation, matched by funding from the UK government through UK Aid Match. Through safe, inclusive and community-based learning spaces, the project is helping out-of-school girls aged 6–16 access education closer to home.
