The Significance of Ramadan

Revelation of the Quran

The importance of Ramadan is rooted in its connection to the revelation of the Quran. Allah says in the Quran:

“The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” [Quran 2:185]

This verse highlights Ramadan’s special status as the month of divine revelation and guidance.

Gates of Paradise Opened

Abu Huraira reported that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When there comes the month of Ramadan, the gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1899]

This hadith emphasises the unique spiritual importance of Ramadan, which amplifies opportunities for good deeds and makes the path to righteousness clearer.

Multiplied Rewards

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Every action a son of Adam does shall be multiplied—a good action by ten times its value, up to 700 times. Allah says: With the exception of fasting, which belongs to Me, and I reward it accordingly. For, one abandons his desire and food for My sake.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1904]

The above hadith highlights the special status of fasting in Ramadan and its immense rewards, emphasising that the reward for fasting is beyond measure and known only to Allah.

This hadith guides Muslims to seek out Laylat al-Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

This significant night is considered more blessed than a thousand months.

Rewards of Laylat al-Qadr

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Decree out of faith and in hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1901]

This above hadith explains the immense value of worshipping on Laylat al-Qadr and its potential for the forgiveness of sins.

Breaking the Fast

Sahl bin Sa’d reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
