6 reasons why we should all care about educating girls

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we have put together some key points about why educating women is important for all of us.

1). According to the World Bank, educating girls would alleviate poverty universally

2). In 1994, then-chief economist at the World Bank Larry Summers wrote “investment in the education of girls may well be the highest-return investment available in the developing world”

3). Providing one extra year of education to girls increases their future earning potential by 10-20%. This increase is 5% more than boys who receive one extra year of education- UN

4). A child born to a literate mother  is twice as likely to live past the age of 5- UNSECO

5). If all girls in sub-Saharan Africa and west Asia received secondary education, child marriages would drop by 64% -UNICEF

6). “There is no tool for development more effective than the education of girls. No other policy is as likely to raise economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, or improve nutrition and promote health – including the prevention of HIV/AIDS.” Kofi A. Annan Secretary-General United Nations.

Women make up more than two-thirds of the world’s 796 million illiterate people. 130 million girls globally are out of school. In Pakistan a half-kilometre increase in the distance to school will decrease girls’ enrolment by 20% (UN). At READ we are focused on getting more girls into education and making schooling more accessible for females. In deprived countries a major issue for girls is the lack of washroom facilities in schools, leading them to miss an entire week of school a month. At READ our schools are equipped with modern, gender segregated washrooms, making it easier for girls to attend school, preventing regular disruption to their education. As well as this, 60% of our teachers are female, as are 50% of our students.

Educating women can help to generate wealth, prevent disease and stop child marriages. Women are the backbone of our society, so we need to support them for the benefit of everyone, after all…

If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation!
